{"id":886,"date":"2021-12-02T09:32:35","date_gmt":"2021-12-02T09:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeofdata.org\/site\/?p=886"},"modified":"2021-12-08T17:12:01","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T17:12:01","slug":"data-cultures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeofdata.org\/site\/data-cultures\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Cultures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Latest data cultures project:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Patterns in Practice is an AHRC funded project that is exploring how practitioners\u2019 beliefs, values and feelings interact to shape how they engage with and in data mining \u2013 a form of \u2018narrow AI\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofdata.org\/site\/patterns-in-practice\">Visit project website<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>My interest in Data Cultures came about through my PhD research that examined the politics of the UK&#8217;s Open Government Data initiative, and my later research of the Secret Life of a Weather Datum (AHRC) project which examined how the socio-cultural and material factors interrelate at different sites of practice to shape data flows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote up my ideas about Data Cultures in the following chapter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bates J (2017) <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.4324\/9781315407388\">Data cultures, power and the city<\/a>, Data and the City (pp. 189-200). <a href=\"http:\/\/eprints.whiterose.ac.uk\/120825\/\">View this article in WRRO<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I also led a small empirical project funded by the Information School that identified the important role of affective dynamics in cultures of data science practice.
