After months of not spending much time on research at all due to the pandemic and industrial action, it was a real pleasure to catch up on things that I&#8217;d missed. I didn&#8217;t quite get through everything I wanted to &#8211; is that even possible?- but I did find time to explore some gems in these piles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"303\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofdata.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-460x303.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lifeofdata.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image-460x303.png 460w, https:\/\/lifeofdata.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image.png 699w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s so much good stuff in there, but a few I found particularly interesting &#8211; in no particular order &#8211; were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Alison Powell&#8217;s <em>Undoing Optimisation <\/em><\/li><li>Linnet Taylor and Nadezhda Purtova&#8217;s <em>What is responsible and sustainable data science?<\/em> (BD&amp;S)<\/li><li>Rob Kitchin&#8217;s second edition of <em>The Data Revolution<\/em><\/li><li>Jennifer Gabrys&#8217; <em>Smart forests and data practices: From the Internet of Trees to planetary governance<\/em> (BD&amp;S)<\/li><li>Anne Henriksen and Anja Bechmann&#8217;s <em>Building truths in AI: Making predictive algorithms doable in healthcare<\/em> (ICS)<\/li><li>Declan Kuch and colleagues&#8217; <em>The promise of precision: datafication in medicine, agriculture and education<\/em> (Policy Studies)<\/li><li>Marina Micheli and colleagues&#8217; <em>Emerging models of data governance in the age of datafication<\/em> (BD&amp;S)<\/li><li>Will Orr and Jenny Davis&#8217; <em>Attributions of ethical responsibility by Artificial Intelligence practitioners<\/em> (ICS)<\/li><li>Abeda Birhane and colleagues&#8217; <em>The Values Encoded in Machine Learning Research<\/em> (Arxiv)<\/li><li>Morten Bay&#8217;s <em>Four challenges to Confucian virtue ethics in technology<\/em> (Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Highly recommend you checking these out!
