Reflective practice has been described as the active and persistent careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it. Reflexivity is a similar idea, but rather than focusing more generally on your assumed knowledge, it asks the person engaging in it to question their own attitudes, thought processes, prejudices, and emotional reactions. It focuses on building a better understanding of how our actions and interactions with others has social influence. Building these types of thinking into your organisation’s work processes, alongside ideas such as socially meaningful transparency and social systems thinking, allows algorithmic mitigation practices to create deeper understandings of the issues at hand.
