Developing Critical AI Cultures is a dialogue event, co-organised by Patterns in Practice and Diverse AI, as part of the Alan Turing Institute’s AI UK Fringe 2024 programme.

Event Description

We need to be critical when considering AI development and usage – but how do we go about this?

Backed by cutting-edge research from the Patterns in Practice project and in partnership with Diverse AI, this co-designed dialogue event will consider the cultural implications of AI technology and explore how we can do better.

You will hear critical perspectives from a range of experts to help collectively think through what needs to change and why. There will be plenty of opportunity to join in the conversation and contribute yourself!

Who should attend? AI practitioners or anyone interacting with AI with a perspective on the cultural implications of AI systems, and how it could better serve their community / cultures. We are particularly keen of hearing from people from culturally diverse AI practitioners, who are underrepresented in the tech industry (LGBTQIA+, Disabled, etc). Whilst the dialogue is open to all geographic locations, we are also keen to attract practitioners working in geographic locations outside of Western Europe and North America.

Please note: All participants are required to provide a brief 2-minute presentation representing their cultural / community AI perspectives. Conversations will inform a written output from this dialogue.

Participants will be compensated for their time, to a value of £60. Details to claim this will be provided ahead of the event. We might need to make a selection depending on the responses we receive.

When? Wednesday 13th March from 3pm – 4.30pm GMT.

Learnings from the discussion will be shared with relevant institutions and projects such as the Alan Turing Institute, and included in Diverse AI’s LLM benchmark research project amongst others.
