On Thursday 16 th November, we hosted our first ‘Patterns in Practice’ dialogue event. We would like to thank everyone who joined us in to hear and discuss our early research themes.
We brought together people working across different industries, from across academia, to the creative arts, to the digital sector, to reflect on how practitioners’ beliefs, values, and feelings interact to shape how they engage with and in data mining and machine learning. In this dialogue, we shared four cross-cutting themes: deficit of surprise, feeding the machine, human-machine collaboration, and tactics of resistance. After a short presentation from Dr Jo Bates, Dr Itzelle Medina Perea, and Dr Erinma Ochu, participants had the opportunity to consider each of the themes, exchange knowledge and experiences from their own work, and point towards what was missing from the research.
We were also joined by Anna Beckett who facilitated and helped design the session, and graphic artist Julia Bakay who produced a ‘visual minutes’ (see above) which captured the insightful conversations between participants and research team members.
The reflections and feedback from this dialogue will be used to help inform the final reports and output from this project.
